High school Spring sports athletes can get a bit bored and stale in the middle of their seasons when they come to a halt when the weather prevents teams and individuals from competing. There are a couple of indoor options for Greene County High School athletes including the weight room at the high school, the Greene County Community Center, and the Jefferson Fieldhouse located just south of the square.
The weight room is used by not only athletes in their season of competition, but on a year around basis. Coaches are hoping the same can be said for The Fieldhouse, which, although a private facility, works closely with high school coaches, and is the home training center for Greene County wrestling on all levels, from those barely old enough to be in school to those that are seniors in high school.
Jeff Schroeder from The Fieldhouse told Raccoon Valley Radio that since opening in June the biggest results have been in the area of increased vertical jump, and in explosiveness. He pointed to senior sprinter Roman Phillips, who has combined weight lifting and aerobic fitness to become one of Class 3A’s top sprinters. Phillips was an average sprinter a season ago, but he currently is ranked second in 3A in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. Greene County coaches are hoping results such as those become more common as more athletes use all the facilities at their disposal.
