Left over embers from a previous fire were the cause of Saturday afternoon’s field fire south of Jefferson.
Greene County Chief Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams says a deputy and the Jefferson Fire Department responded to a field fire at 1931 Q Avenue at 2:19pm on Saturday.
Williams indicated that the owners had conducted a controlled burn on Friday and leftover embers from that fire were spread to dry grass which were ignited by the high winds on Saturday.
He states that fire crews worked for over two hours to extinguish the flames and prevent any further property damage and no one was hurt in the incident.
Williams suggests that those who are planning on doing a controlled burn to notify the Law Enforcement Center and create a barrier around what you want to burn so that no other materials are ignited and always monitor any burn that you do.
