Dallas County Conservation Board naturalists will teach local residents how to navigate through the wild in a hands-on exploration program next weekend.
Museum Curator Pete Malmberg says the Saturday afternoon event is a great one for those who want to get off the beaten path.
“When you learn to read a compass, map and GPS you’re prepared to go places most humans will never set foot… Learn the basics of reading a topographic map and a compass, then learn to use a hand held GPS. You will put your skills together to hike the wild of (the Kuehn Conservation Area)” says Malmberg.
The Navigate the Wilds – Compass and GPS program takes place Saturday, April 26th from 1-5:30pm.
Malmberg says everyone’s invited to attend but you do need to bring some necessary supplies.
“Bring water, a snack, bug repellent and good hiking shoes, those are very important. This program requires hiking off trails through prairies, woodlands and hills. There is a good trail system there, but this time you’re going cross country so it’s kind of exciting and different.”
The cost to attend is $4 per person and registration is required. To save your spot call 465-3577.
