Crews Fight Out of Control Grass Fire
The Perry Volunteer Fire Department and Woodward Fire responded to a grass fire west of Highway 169, about a half mile north of Highway 141 shortly before 11am Friday.
It doesn’t appear that any structures were damaged or anyone was hurt in the blaze. Though the winds made it difficult for crews to battle the fire.

Inaugural Toddler Fest Takes Place in Adel Today
Public libraries in Dallas County and the 4 R Kids organization are coming together for a new event this weekend, designed to offer a variety of fun activities for parents and young children.
The inaugural Toddler Fest takes place Saturday at the Dallas County Fairgrounds.
Perry Public Library Director Mary Murphy says the event is designed for children ages 2-5 and their caregivers. The goal is to create awareness of the many literacy resources available in Dallas County, while giving families a chance to enjoy free activities.
The Blank Park Zoo and Science Center of Iowa will be there. Along with everything from face painting and crafts to kids identification cards and story time.
Several family centered organizations like the Dallas County Hospital and the ISU Extension Offices will be there as well, offering information on available resources.
Each toddler who attends will go home with a free book and a box of crayons. Registration is not needed, everyone is welcome to stop by between 10am and noon.
Food Preservation Program at Forest Park Sunday
The Dallas County Conservation Board and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are coming together to offer a food preservation class this weekend.
The event takes place Sunday at the 1:30pm. Museum Curator Pete Malmberg says it’s a great event for families that will teach attendees how to dry, freeze and can foods.
It’s led by Mary Krisc, who is a nutritionist for the Extension office and has many years of experience working with various offices.
Though no actual food preparation or preservation will be done in class, participants will be able to take home recipes to complete the food preservation instructions.
The cost to attend is $5 and registration is required. It takes place Sunday afternoon at the Forest Park Museum.
Sign Up Today for Perry’s Summer Swim Team
The Perry Parks and Recreation Department is holding registration and suit fitting this weekend for 2014 summer swim team.
The competitive league competes in the Iowa West Swim Conference and meets are held on Tuesday and Thursday nights. Weekday morning practice times differ depending on the child’s age group.
It’s open to kids ages 6-18 who are able to swim the length of the pool without any help.
The season starts May 27th and continues through July 12th.
Registration is $80 for the first swimmer in a family and $60 for additional swimmers.

Perry Chamber Hosts Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony
Around 100 people gathered at the Hotel Pattee Tuesday as the Perry Area Chamber of Commerce celebrated 2013 and looked ahead to the rest of 2014.
Attendees enjoyed a buffet dinner and keynote address from cartoonist Mike Lynch.
Taking home the Spirit of Perry award was Raccoon Valley Radio. Chamber Executive Director Bob Wilson says the trio of stations, and primarily KDLS-AM was recognized for their many contributions to the community.
The Citizen of the Year award was given to Raccoon Valley Radio’s Shawn Kenney who has been a long time Perry supporter and is a former Chamber board President.
2013 was looked at as the “year of the volunteer” and the Chamber took time to acknowledge everyone who helped with event such as RAGBRAI, Fly Iowa, the grand opening of the Raccoon River Valley Trail’s north loop and several other community events.
Special recognition was also given to Parker’s Flowers owner Brian Parker and longtime employee Betty Thomas for the shop’s six decades of business in Perry. And Dallas County Hospital was thanked for providing quality health care in Perry for 60 years.
