Jefferson Matters: Main Street in conjunction with the City of Jefferson and Greene County Supervisors are working together to finish up the first round of solid bronze plaques for the downtown square in Jefferson.

Jefferson Matters Program Director Alan Robinson previously told Raccoon Valley Radio that the City has purchased four plaques to be placed at each of the alleyway entrances on around the square of four iconic individuals of the County:  Mahlon and Albert Head, Guy C. Richardson and Eva Leonard.

Since then, Robinson says they’ve added two more to the list which are the City of Scranton’s historic water tower that has been in existence since 1897 and the Lincoln Highway that goes through the entire county.

He notes that Jefferson Monument Works has been creating the six plaques that they plan on revealing before the Bell Tower Festival on June 13th and 14th.

Each plaque costs $1,500 with money to be used from the community-donated streetscape fund from the City of Jefferson and the County will be donating funds to help purchase the next set of plaques.

Along with information about each subject or individual on the plaques themselves, Robinson adds that each will have a QR code that smartphone users can swipe and it will take you to the City of Jefferson’s web page with additional information about those subjects.

He talks about one other QR code that will be on the opposite side of the plaques on the brick columns.

“And that code is going to go to another (web)page that’s going to focus on all the historic buildings on that side of the square.  So each of the four sides of the square will have the code, taking you to talk in greater detail about these particular buildings.  So, we are really excited about that.”

Robinson comments that their goal is to showcase their historic downtown district and the leaders that made the county what it is today.
