A Des Moines man had to be transported to a metro hospital yesterday afternoon following a single vehicle accident on Interstate-80.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, 47 year-old Martin Spooner of Des Moines, was eastbound on I-80 near the 88-mile marker around 2:20pm, when for an unknown reason he drove his 2013 Volvo semi into the south ditch.  The semi then rolled and came to rest on its top facing east.

Spooner was transported to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines via Stuart Rescue, and he remains hospitalized in fair condition, according to Mercy Hospital officials.

The accident report indicates Spooner’s life was saved by the use of a seatbelt.
