guthrie center schoolThe large group speech season has been over for almost two months now, but at Guthrie Center High School, the work of one choral reading group is still making an impact.

Guthrie Center speech coach Kelsey Little says her choral reading group of eleven students has been asked to perform their speech, “Legendary,” at numerous activities in town over the next month, and she calls the opportunities “incredible.”

“I’ve been telling the kids, ‘you know, we didn’t get nominated for All-State, but this is bigger and this is better because we have left an impact on our community that is insurmountable’.  People want to know what is going on, what we’ve been up to and what we’re doing.  To think that we’ve been invited to share is just such an honor.  I couldn’t be more proud of our kids and how hard they’ve worked, and they’re all excited for these opportunities as well.”

In addition to performing at the Guthrie Center Speech Showcase on Friday, Aprill 11th, Little says her “Legendary” group will perform at the Relay for Life Cancer Banquet on Tuesday, April 29th at Guthrie County Hospital, and at the mother-daughter dinner on Saturday, May 3rd at the Guthrie Center Methodist Church.

Little says she’s excited to get together with her students for a couple more performances because they are simply, a “special group.”

‘I can’t even explain… the journey that all of us have taken, the memories that we’ve made, the friendships that we’ve made, and the people’s lives that we’ve touched… it’s just incredible.  And to think that we’re still the buzz of the community months later is just awesome, and that’s the whole reason why did this in the first place.”

“Legendary” received a “I” rating during the large group speech contest in Ankeny back in February.  The choral reading piece was written by Little to honor and remember Guthrie Center residents who have fought or are currently fighting cancer.
