The high school golf seasons are scheduled to begin on Monday, April 7 for the Greene County Rams. Girls’ coach Keith Vander Wilt has just five girls out, while boys’ head coach Dave Destival and assistant Charles Brobst have 22 boys out for golf.
One of the challenges is all the different courses the golfers play on, which coach Destival says is a big advantage if you’ve played the course previously. “Distance is a huge thing. The experienced golfer knows what club they hit from a certain distance the last time they played that course. Or knowing how a putt breaks on the green. It’s feeling comfortable as opposed to never having played the course before. You’re not feeling intimidated by playing with someone from another school. All those kinds of things come into having experience as a high school golfer.”
The Rams meet Carroll High on April 7 to start the season with the girls in Carroll and the boys at the Jefferson Community Golf Course.
