We are now three weeks away from Greene County’s Relay for Life event on Saturday, April 26th.
There are a few dates and deadlines that area residents need to be reminded of as we draw closer to the big day.
Tomorrow is the deadline to register for the new “Color Out Cancer” 5K run/walk to avoid paying an increase in fees. Committee member Libby Towers says either today or tomorrow, anyone can sign up for the educational race for $20 for ages 13 and older and $10 for anyone 12 years or younger.
However, if you join after April 1st, the registration fee goes up to $25 for anyone ages 13 and older and $15 for children 12 years-old and younger. You can contact the Greene County Community Center for more information or to sign up for the race that will be on Saturday, April 26th at 10:30am.
Then on Friday, April 4th at 7:30pm at Greene Bean Coffee in Jefferson will be one of the two featured “Fight Back” speakers. Organizer Peg Raney says local high school graduate Anne Heun will be talking about family genetics and what cancerous risks people might have due to possible inherited genetic predisposition.
Raney points out that Heun received her Master’s Degree in Medical Genetics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is a 2005 graduate of Jefferson-Scranton High School. Recently, she’s been working with Unity Point Health-Des Moines as a genetics counselor and working with John Stoddard Cancer Center.
She will make a 30-minute presentation and will be available for questions afterward. The public is invited to the free event.
Raney adds that Sharon Stalder, who is a cancer survivor from Jefferson, will end the Relay for Life event on April 26th with her free presentation at the Christ Lutheran Church at 7pm.
