imagesThe ADM girls track team is slated to head outside this evening for its first outdoor track meet of the 2014 season against the rival Dallas Center-Grimes Mustangs.

The Tigers have had over a week off since their last indoor competition at Central College, and head coach Bart Mueller says he spent much of that time off working with his runners on the technical aspects of their events.

“The starts, the handoffs, the jumping for sure.  We (also) got a lot of stamina work in.  That’s one thing where early in the season, our 200s and our 400s at the end of those races the girls struggle a little bit because they’re not quite up to that stamina ability.  It isn’t just speed in those two races, you’ve got to finish the race too, so we’ll continue to work on building our stamina.”

For Mueller, even though his team’s biggest strength is its speed, he believes his girls can continue to improve their times by making a couple of adjustments here and there.

“In all the sprints there is a running form that you have to achieve–it’s high knees, toes up, pumping arms correctly.  Those little things in the middle part of a race add up.  A lot of speed is God-given, but there is a little bit improvement the girls can make just by working on your form and running real smooth races, so that’s what we’ll keep working on.”

While the ADM girls track team has just one meet this week, they’re busy next week, with four events on the calendar… Seems like Coach Mueller will have multiple opportunities to see if his girls can make those small improvements.
