The ADM boys and girls’ golf teams had their first week of practice this week, but unfortunately for the players, the erratic and less-than-ideal weather didn’t allow for those practices to be outside.
Still though, head coach Cris Goodale says his players have been working on their games inside the high school gym. How is that you might ask? Well, Coach Goodale explains…
“We’ve got some equipment that’s called ‘birdie balls’ and it simulates a regular ball. It is better than a wiffle ball–a wiffle ball you don’t really the contact. These are basically PVC pipe that are cut down and rounded off, and the flight is just restricted. They feel like a golf ball coming off the club, and so they’re really helpful.”
Those birdie balls are so helpful in fact, Coach Goodale has been able to ask his players to work on a specific facet of their games.
“We’ve been working all on the short game–chipping and putting. We can take full swings in the gym, but these (birdie balls) are just real realistic for golf. It is good as you can get right now without being able to go outdoors.”
Coach Goodale says he hopes his players won’t be indoors for much longer. He believes the boys and girls will be out at least on the driving range at some point during the week ahead.
The first meet of the season for the boys and girls’ teams is on Thursday, April 10th, against Woodward-Granger.
