2014 Jefferson Parks and Rec BoardThe Jefferson Parks and Recreation Board met yesterday in regular session.

The Board approved Durlam Electric’s estimate of $18,500 to replace two heat exchange units on top of the Greene County Community Center.  During an inspection conducted by Drees Company from Carroll, it was noted that the current units are sucombing to wear and tear and the lifespan of the 16 year-old models are for only 20 years.  JPRD Director Vicky Lautner said the primary funding for the ten-ton and 7.5-ton units will come from Hotel/Motel Tax.

The Board also approved the local bicycle club, Cyclists of Greene, as an official part of JPRD.  Chair and Mayor Craig Berry told the Board that they’ve been running all their programs through JPRD but now they made it official at the Board meeting.

The Board approved to allow the Greene County High School girls basketball program operate the gym at the rec center starting June 1st for six Sundays from 4-6pm with other area schools for a summer basketball league.  Lautner pointed out that head coach Chad Morton would charge $50 per team with all money to go to the rec center.

Lautner also reported that they received $1,855 from the Dr. Robert Burke Memorial Fund and she talked about what they will use that money for.

“We would like to get a tennis machine that people could use down at the tennis courts.  That machine would throw balls at you and you can hit them and I know that Dr. Burke use to have one of those machines and just two years ago it went haywire and it did not get replaced.  So this is a good thing for the community of Jefferson and the tennis enthusiasts.”

She added that they will purchase a new Steiner pump for the cholrine and acid chemicals for the Jefferson Municipal Pool.  The cost for a new pump is $447 and Lautner noted that they just received $440.55 from Pickett’s Salvage for the metal that was taken out of the pool’s maintenance and filter area.

The Board decided to table its decision on plans to replace the flooring in the fitness area of the rec center pending more information and what the PACE committee says from what they can cover for the cost of the project.  The Board also tabled a discussion until next month about an Active Shooter Policy for the rec center and the pool.

It was also decided by the Board to form a committee to revisit the 28E agreement with Jefferson-Scranton Schools about sharing the rec center and the school’s gyms for winter programs including basketball games on different nights for the upcoming season.  No other action took place on the topic.
