The Greene County High School track and field teams will debut indoors this Friday, March 21, in Storm Lake at the Buena Vista University meet for high school teams. The marathon event has been known to take more than seven hours to complete, and it can turn into an endurance test for athletes, coaches, and spectators.

Greene County girls’ head coach Kelly Simpson told Raccoon Valley Radio that some athletes may compete at or near the beginning of the meet at 4 p.m., while others may not be in action until 8 or 9 p.m. In addition, those with more than one event could see a wait time of several hours from one event to the next.

Coach Simpson explains the practice regimen for this week. “We’ll go fairly hard today and Tuesday, then taper off Wednesday and Thursday. We’re kind of looking at Friday’s meet as a glorified practice. No team score will be kept and some of the events indoors are shorter distances than their outdoor counterparts, but it does give us a chance to see the kids in a competitive situation. In some cases, our athletes will be in events new to them, so it’s a good opportunity to compete and see what they can do.” Coach Simpson indicated most the 25 girls on the Greene County squad would have at least one event on Friday.

Dean Lansman is the Rams boys’ head coach. He expects most of the 40-member squad to make the trip.

The outdoor season is slated to begin in Jefferson with the Greene County Early Bird Meet on Monday, March 31 at Linduska Field.
