Greene County High School head track and field coach Dean Lansman, his assistant coaches, and the 40 boys out for the sport are working toward a successful season. In recent seasons the Rams have had top level throwers, hurdlers, and middle distance runners. An area the coach believes will be improved in 2014 is the sprinting events. Junior Dylan Hamilton is among those who will primarily run 100 and 200 meter dash races, along with the sprint relays. He told Raccoon Valley Radio he thinks this will be a good season. “We have a lot of guys from last year coming back, so I think we’ll be pretty good. We’re going to need to find some distance kids to step up and fill in, but we’ve got a lot of sprinters.”
The Rams are members of the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference, one of Iowa’s top conferences for large Class 2A and small Class 3A programs. The Rams are in 3A, as they were last season. Hamilton was asked what that good competition does for he and his teammates. “It really helps us push ourselves to want to win and to be known as one of the best teams in the state.”
The outdoor season for Greene County begins on March 31 in Jefferson for the Early Bird Meet at Linduska Field. At least part of the boys’ team is scheduled to compete at the March 18 ISU high school meet indoors in Ames, and the entire squad is slated for an indoor meet on March 21 in Storm Lake at Buena Vista University.
