When the 2014-15 wrestling season begins at Greene County High School, head coach Mark Sawhill is hoping his team will be able to fill more weight classes than they did this year. That’s not a given since five seniors graduated and only nine boys (seventh and eighth grades combined) were out for middle school wrestling. There were a lot of positives on the varsity level this season including winning a third straight Heart of Iowa Activities Conference tournament even though only nine of the 14 weight classes were filled by the Rams.

The Ram coach and his assistants may be spending at least some time in the off season talking to those who wrestled in the past and didn’t go out this season, and others who may not have wrestled at all, in an effort to try and better fill the weight classes. “We’re inviting everyone to give it a try. There’s nothing wrong with coming out, trying wrestling and seeing if you like it.” The coach sited former state tournament qualifier Mark Paup as an example of someone with no experience with wrestling, yet making it to the state tournament. Aaron Schroeder is another with limited wrestling experience prior to his junior year of high school, but he, too, qualified for the state tournament.
