guthrie center schoolThe registration deadline for entering a team in the inaugural Guthrie Center Alumni Men’s & Women’s Basketball Tournament is a month from tomorrow, and event coordinator Steve Froehlich says he is starting to receive many sign-up inquiries.

Froehlich, a teacher and coach in the Guthrie Center Schools, moved to the area a couple years ago, and he says the idea for starting an alumni basketball event comes from his old ties to Algona, Iowa.

“They’ve been doing an alumni tournament for the last 13 years, and I’ve played in it and it’s a great thing.  Then I moved here and I see how many times this school has been to state in the last 30, 40 years–they’ve been to state 26 times, the girls and boys (combined).  They’ve haven’t had anything here and I’ve had people say, ‘Gall, wouldn’t that be great to have (the tournament)?’.  The response has been great.  The deadline is coming up soon and hopefully we get a bunch of teams in it.”

Froehlich says he’s hoping to have at least four girls teams and 8-12 boys teams sign up for this year’s first-ever alumni tournament.  The inaugural event is currently scheduled for the weekend of April 4th & 5th.

Cost for entry is $100 per team, with all funds raised going to the Guthrie Center athletic department.  Area Guthrie Center alumni interested in registering can do so by CLICKING HERE.
