Wednesday’s drug bust in Rippey was the first for the newest member of the Greene County Sheriff’s office in K-9 Leo.

Sheriff Steve Haupert explains how nice a job the German shepherd dog did with his handler, Chief Deputy Sheriff Jack Williams in Wednesday’s incident.

“It was very exciting and I know Jack (Williams) was very excited also that Leo had performed very well and we’re all excited.  He’s (Leo) here with us and on-duty and we’re excited to have him with us.”

Williams was surprised to have to use Leo after only having gone through a two-week training course before his first call came for a drug search.

“I wasn’t expecting to have a call already.  It usually takes a month or two for the bonding process to go with a dual-purpose dog and we’ve actually come along greatly.”

Williams and Leo recovered eight grams of marijuana and methamphetamine residue and needles in Wednesday’s incident at a Sparky’s One Stop gas station in Rippey.

The two alleged suspects, 44 year-old Anthony Rothmeyer of Grand Junction and 33 year-old Matthew Kilts of Perry are facing drug charges from the Greene County Sheriff’s office.
