According to the National Weather Service, today’s high temperature in the Guthrie County area is a frigid seven degrees.
With such cold temperatures expected to continue for the forseeable future, Panora P.E.T.S. volunteer Linda Shelley has some advice for local residents about how to keep your pets, especially those who typically stay outdoors, healthy and safe during the colder winter months.
“The outside pets need some form of shelter, be it a barn, be it an out-building, be it a garage–something with some wind blockage, warm bedding and whatever you can find to help keep them warm. (Feed them) plenty of food and fresh water because they need more food to keep themselves warm… Keep them away from things like things like anti-freeze which is highly poisonous–it is sweet so they will drink it.”
Shelley says it is also important for dog owners who frequently walk their dogs to regularly wipe paws off due to the high amount of salt used on rural roads during the winter. If a dog’s paw is cut by salt, Shelley advises the use of vaseline as the best way to heal the wound.
