The peak of flu season is right around the corner and if you haven’t protected yourself against the virus yet, now is the time to do so.

Dallas County Hospital repertory therapist Audrey Erickson says it’s tough to know exactly when the worst part of flu season will hit but it’s usually in early winter.

“Flu season itself is pretty unpredictable.  We’re never exactly sure when it will start, how bad it will be or how long it will last because it depends on a lot of factors.  Typically we see the peak of flu season in the winter months of January and February” says Erickson.

Even if you already got vaccinated or don’t plan on doing so, Erickson says there are simple things you can do to help prevent getting the flu.

“It’s just very important to practice good health habits like covering your mouth when you cough, washing your hands a lot.  Avoid touching your mouth, your nose, your eyes because germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches these areas.  Good healthy like getting plenty of sleep, being physically active, try to manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids and eating good nutritious food are ways to prevent the flu.”

Flu vaccines are available at most pharmacies and County public health offices.  Anyone with questions should contact their health care provider.
