No Snow Removal AreasThe Greene County Board of Supervisors is considering closing seven more miles of gravel roads to the list of no snow removal roads in the county.

County Engineer Wade Weiss says these locations go through a series of considerations before he proposes them to the Supervisors including whether or not people live on the proposed roads.

He says all six locations which will include seven miles don’t have anyone living on them and points out some other benefits to labeling them as “No Snow Removal” areas during the winter.

“Trying to come up with some efficiencies so we do not raise property taxes, as we have not done here in the secondary roads department.  And we’re just looking to continue to providing as good of service as we’ve had in the past.  We’re talking very minimal mileage aside of our total mileage of nearing 1,000 miles of road, we’re talking 14 miles total so not a big issue.”

Seven miles were established last year and Weiss believes that by adding seven more miles, it won’t affect anyone negatively.

He states that all these roads are primarily used by farming operations and not by the general public, plus all the proposed roads are gravel and have a dangerous level from road to ditch areas that snow could find its way back onto the road very easily.

Weiss didn’t have an amount of cost savings because each winter storm and snowfall is different for every area, it’s impossible to estimate the savings.

If the proposed roads are passed by the Supervisors, then each one will have a “No Snow Removal” sign placed on it so that the general public is aware of what roads won’t be plowed in the winter time.

The Supervisors are expected to act on the topic at next week’s meeting.
