We first reported yesterday that the City of Panora has officially submitted its housing rehabilitation grant application to the Iowa Economic Development Authority in Des Moines, and Region XII Council of Governments Housing Programs Manager Laurie Gilbert has played an integral role in making that happen.
If Panora receives the grant, at least 10 owner-occupied homes will receive restoration work to make them more energy efficient and maintenance-free. Such things as the homes’ siding, roofs, windows and overall structure will receive the majority of rehabilitative work.
Gilbert says the IEDA typically shells out about $13,000,000 annually for the statewide housing program, yet it receives about $19,000,000 in grant requests each year. To be selected, towns need to submit strong applications, and Gilbert says Panora has done just that, given the fact it received $40,000 in backing from City Council and three $2,500 pledges from other area entities.
“Anytime that we can get support from area committees, groups, businesses… that always gives us a couple extra points. Showing this great of support should give the City a better chance at getting this application (selected).”
Because it is essentially a statewide competition for funds, there is always some uncertainty that comes with applying for such a grant. Gilbert explains her confidence level in Panora’s application.
“I would like to say I’m confident not knowing what other communities are submitting applications, but I think Panora does have a good chance… at least I’m hoping they have a good chance.”
The IEDA will notify Panora whether or not its housing rehab application has been accepted sometime in early April.
