The reconstruction of the McCreary Community Center Parking lot is one of the more popular projects being talked about around Perry, unfortunately it looks like it’ll take longer than expected.
Jensen Builders, the company contracted to do the job for the city, reported to the council that they’re about one and a half to two weeks behind schedule.
As City Administrator Butch Niebuhr explains the delay is due to two main factors, the first being the weather.
“The problem with the cooler weather is it just doesn’t dry out as quick, it needs sunshine and warm weather for it to dry out. So what little rain we have had were in spurts of half an inch to almost an inch of rain and it takes a good two or three days for that to dry out in the area that they have exposed” says Niebuhr.
The other issue is a communication issue between Jensen Builders and their subcontractor. Niebuhr says they still remain hopeful that the majority of the project can be finished yet this year.
“They would have liked to have had this large portion of the parking lot paved by now, they’re still working toward that. They believe that once they can start paving they have the crews that can do that even in cold weather. That being said, once we start getting into below freezing temperatures in a 24 hour period, so during the day and the night, that’s going to question mark that quite a bit” says Niebuhr.
The contract with Jensen sets the project deadline of May 31st. Besides the paving of the parking lot, new grass seed will also need to be set in the spring.
