Veterans Day is coming up next Monday, November 11th, and schools throughout the local area will be finding ways to honor and celebrate the efforts of those who have served our nation’s troops.
Guthrie Center Elementary is one such school, as Principal Diane Flanery says local veterans are invited to attend their all-school assembly at 9am on Monday. K through 6th graders will read thank you notes and poems and sing songs to honor the veterans for all the time and sacrifice they have given in serving our country.
The assembly used to feature local veterans speaking to students, but Flanery says the school reversed course a few years ago, as she feels its important that her students do the talking.
Flanery says her students have really rallied around the event the past few years.
“We will be wearing our red, white and blue on Monday, and you know a lot of our children have grandparents, great grandparents, even moms and dads in the military who have served. I think most of our children have some kind of a connection to a veteran, so it’s really important for us to honor them on Veterans Day.”
Any local veterans interested in attending the assembly at Guthrie Center Elementary on Monday can RSVP by calling the school’s office at 641-332-2720.
