cattle accidentEscaped cattle cause a one vehicle accident in Greene County.

On Monday night, some 200 head of western feeder calves from a feeder lot in Carroll County had escaped by pushing a fence open reported the owner, Dave Remsburg.

Then around 5:13am Tuesday morning, Sheriff Steve Haupert says Dustin Jackson Hartman, age 23 of Fairbank was travelling northbound on D Avenue and 177th Street when he hit seven, 600-pound calves that were on the roadway, killing five instantly.

Haupert reports that both Dustin and his passenger Alison Clara Hartman age 22 of Coon Rapids were not seriously injured in the accident and were both wearing their seatbelts.  Hartman’s 2001 Monte Carlo SS is a total loss.

As of 6am this morning, there are still 60 calves missing and are believed to be in Carroll and Northwestern Greene County.

The Sheriff’s Office and Churdan Fire and Rescue responded to the scene.
