In week one, ADM’s offense had five turnovers that resulted in 27 Dallas Center-Grimes points.
In week two, the Tigers could only muster 14 points against a physical Winterset defense.
But week three, that was a different story.
Offensive coordinator Steve Stanley had his play-calling dialed in and players executed ADM’s pistol attack to near perfection, accumulating 547 yards of offense while putting up 48 points against Glenwood.
Stanley says the offensive explosion was a welcome surprise.
“We made quite a few strides from week two to week three. That week of practice was trying on everybody. Everybody was getting after it which is good; it was really competitive. I really didn’t expect 48 points, you never expect to put up 50 points. But after we started with that first drive, I just looked at everybody and said, ‘yep, we’re gonna get after it tonight’. I think when they realized that they were able to score, we knew it was going to be pretty fun.”
One reason why the ADM offense took off last week might be because starting quarterback Kolby Whisner is no longer playing both ways. In the Tigers’ first game, Whisner played safety along with quarterback, but he has since been replaced by Robbie Sloss in the secondary.
Stanley says having the ability to communicate and talk things over with his quarterback when the ADM defense is out on the field makes a big difference.
“I’m able to talk to him about what he’s seeing on the field. Having Kolby there is great because I can set up the next few plays. I can say, ‘you know, if they’re going to come out in this, if they look like they’re going to blitz you this is something we can audible to’. It’s just a learning process for him where we can talk through things and he can see it how I’m seeing it.”
Whisner had his best game as the starter last week, completing 17 of 23 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns. See if his progression continues tomorrow night against a tough, physical Creston Panthers defense.
