The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau’s Special Traffic Enforcement Program continues this week until Sunday.
With that in mind, Jefferson Police Chief Dave Morlan wants to remind everyone that not only is drunk driving being watched for, but also other driving distractions.
He says one of the primary distractions for drivers are cellular phones. Chief Morlan states that it’s Iowa law that no driver is allowed to write, send or receive text messages while operating a vehicle. He notes that Iowa law also stipulates that anyone 14-18 years of age are prohibited from talking on their cell phones while driving, while anyone over 18 are allowed to talk on cell phones.
Additional distractions include: eating and drinking, watching a video, grooming, talking to passengers and adjusting the radio or CD player.
He wants to help ensure everyone’s safety during the sTEP Wave program and all other times of the year as well.
