Greene County Rams head football coach Dean Lansman, his coaching staff and players, are preparing for the Friday night season opening game in Perry at Dewey Field vs. the Blue Jays in the renewal of the Annual Battle of the Cowbell. The extreme heat and humidity this week have made preparations a little more challenging, but the coach told Raccoon Valley Radio things have gone pretty well. “We kept our practice time the same from 3:45 p.m. to about six o’clock each day. It’s like I told the kids, we have to get acclimated to play in this weather. Last fall it was about like this for the first two weeks. This week we’ve gone in what we call “shells”, which is shoulder pads and helmets all week long. You’re still able to get a lot accomplished at that point and it’s still really full out go practice. The coaches were making sure we weren’t going all the way down to the ground, but we were still getting physical and still getting the reps and looks that we needed to get in this week.”
The Greene County and Perry varsity teams play tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. You can hear the play-by-play of the varsity game on both KDLS 1310 AM and KGRA 98.9 FM. Our coverage starts at 6:30 p.m.
The Rams and Blue Jays were scheduled to play ninth grade football on Friday prior to the varsity game, but that has been moved because of the heat. The game is now scheduled to be played in Jefferson and will be played on Monday, Sept. 2 (Labor Day) at 4:30 p.m. with the Perry and Greene County JV teams playing after the ninth graders are done.
