The Greene County Helping Hands with Habitat for Humanity have announced its two home projects for the summer.
Starting this Saturday, local volunteers will help make repairs to two homes in the county. The first one is at 707 Sand Street in Churdan. Habitat volunteers will repair siding and windows, replace the front steps and apply paint to the outside. The second project will be in Jefferson at 614 South Olive Street. Volunteers will repair leaking windows and replace a collapsing front staircase.
Habitat board member Gary Von Ahsen says the Helping Hands initiative was created several years ago, but recently its joined with Habitat for Humanity in Boone County and now its a program where anyone can volunteer their time to help low income homeowners with costly repairs which helps a greater number of people..
“The sheer amount of work that’s involved in building a house, to get it all accomplished, we have gone to the Helping Hands program because we can help many more people that way. This year, we intend to help at least four families in Greene County, whereas if we build a house, it would only be one.”
Von Ahsen adds that the Helping Hands program has reached places even outside of just Greene and Boone counties.
“And this has seems to be kind of a model for other people even in the Midwest. And they seem to be incorporating that into the Habitat program.”
From 8:30am-2:30pm, volunteers are needed every Saturday to help with home projects. To sign up call the Habitat office in Boone County at 515-432-1168.
