As we told you last week, a 31 year-old Chariton man was killed after the vehicle he was riding in blew through a stop sign and was struck by an oncoming car.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, a blood test shows 23 year-old Michael James McAfee Jr. of Adel was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the accident happened around 1pm July 3rd.

McAfee was traveling west on 250th Street and failed to stop at the stop sign at U Avenue.  Once McAfee’s vehicle entered the intersection it was struck by another car headed south on U Avenue, driven by 58 year-old Kent Mills of Dallas Center.

Both Dean and McAfee were extricated from the vehicle by mechanical means after their vehicle came to rest upside down in the southwest ditch. Dean was pronounced dead at the scene and McAfee was taken to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines via Mercy One helicopter.

Mills received minor injuries in the crash.  Both vehicles were totaled, receiving approximately $10,000 in damages. A fence on Robert Lund’s property near the accident scene also received around $1,000 in damages.

It appears this wasn’t McAfee’s first problem with drugs or alcohol.  He was ticketed for possession of alcohol underage back in 2008 and received a ticket for open container in a motor vehicle less than a month before the accident.

So far, no citations have been issued for this accident.
