The Perry High School softball and baseball fields were lit up for the first time Tuesday night to mark the completion of the field lighting project.
When the fields were originally constructed, lights were not included due to cost. But thanks to approval from the Perry board of education and support from the Perry Booster Club, Perry community the district now has lighted fields.
Superintendent Lynn Ubben says Perry grad Jeff Menz volunteered to erect the lights if the district was interested in completing the project. Realizing this would provide substantial savings, Ubben says the board put the project out to bid.
Ubben says the lights will allow summer softball and baseball games to be played later in the day, similar to games scheduled in other districts. She says by having to start games in the middle of the day to have them over before dark, it put the athletes out on the field in some very hot summer days. Now, the games will be able to start later, which Ubben says will be safer for all involved.
Ubben says Perry has some great sports facilities but were unable to host any tournaments due to the lack of lighted fields. Hopefully the new lights will open doors to future hosting opportunities.
