Greene County High School head football coach Dean Lansman understands his team faces a big challenge on Sept. 21 when the Rams meet undefeated Kuemper Catholic at Carroll Athletic Field. The Rams are 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Class 2A District 8 after winning the annual homecoming game 28-0 vs. Red Oak in Jefferson last week. The Knights are celebrating homecoming this week and the Greene County coach figures an early score or some other form of momentum builder will be key if the Rams are to pull the upset. “An early touchdown would really give our team confidence, but so would a defensive stand or a big play of some type. Kuemper has been dominant so far and they have a very good football team.”

The Knights have victories of Class 3A programs Carroll High and Denison-Schleswig, as well as 2A programs Clarinda Academy and South Central Calhoun (Lake City). Kuemper is averaging more than 47 points per game while yielding just 11 per contest. They’ve given up just 16 points in the past three games combined. The Knights are ranked as high as fourth in the Class 2A polls.

KGRA 98.9 FM will have the play-by-play of the Greene County – Kuemper Catholic contest. Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. A freshman contest precedes the varsity game at 4:45 p.m.
