A week ago at this time Greene County had just completed its most successful week of wrestling of the season. A 3-0 dual meet sweep of Ogden, Audubon, and Southeast Valley (Gowrie) on Jan. 3 was followed up with a team title at the Jan.  4 North Polk Round-Robin Tournament in Alleman.

The week just completed told a different story. Head Coach Zach Beekman knew the competition would be ratcheted up, with a trip to Class 2A number one ranked PCM on Jan. 10 and the South Hardin Tournament in Eldora Jan. 12. What the coach did not know when the week began is that by the time Saturday afternoon ended, he would be without 50% of his team. That was the case as injuries and illness were the main culprits leading to an eighth place showing among nine teams in Eldora, and no Greene County individual placing higher than fourth.

Junior Colby Kafer at 152 lbs. was fourth at the Storm Invitational on Saturday. Chance McCollom (113) was fifth, with Braden Gallagher (106), Joe Davis (132), Gage Michelson (220), and Matt Naberhaus (285) all placing sixth. Joel Ward (160) did not finish among the top six, and both Will Hansen (145) and Bryce Hoyle (195) were injured while wrestling Saturday and did not finish the tournament. Brady Stauffer (132) and Clint Dennhardt (182) did not wrestle either Thursday or Saturday due to illness, and Cam Miller (138) was withheld because of injury.

The Rams host Roland-Story (Story City) and North Polk Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the middle school gym in the final home meet of the season. It will also be Senior Night. The Heart of Iowa Activities Conference Tournament is Friday at 5 p.m. in Des Moines at Saydel High School.
