A man from Kent, Washington is scheduled to be sentenced after pleading guilty to two charges stemming from an alleged assault that occurred in Perry last August.

According to court documents, 35-year-old David Ross Walt accepted an Alford plea bargain for two of the four counts he was initially charged with. An Alford plea means that Walt maintains his innocence but admits there is enough evidence to warrant a conviction in a jury trial. He reportedly attempted to choke another individual during an altercation that stemmed from Walt attempting to pick up his 10-year-old daughter from his ex-wife’s house in Perry. Per the plea agreement, he will be sentenced for domestic assault – impeding blood or airflow, strangulation resulting in injury, a class D felony, as well as assault causing bodily injury, a serious misdemeanor. The other two charges, trespass resulting in injury and child endangerment, both serious misdemeanors, will be dismissed.

Additionally, the State agreed to amend the no contact order on Walt, so that he can have contact with his daughter at the discretion of the Iowa Department of Human Services. However, the order was also modified to include no contact with the victim of the strangulation. A sentencing hearing will be held on Friday, February 1st at 8:30 a.m. in the Dallas County Courthouse.
