The Heart of Iowa Activities Conference moved its annual tournament to a Friday night for the first time, but the weather forecast prompted league officials to cancel it Friday morning with no make up date. Greene County’s first year head coach Zach Beekman dropped by Raccoon Valley Radio on Friday and talked about his team and the season. “We certainly would have liked to have had the conference tournament, but sometimes that’s the way it goes. It does give us a little more rest time gearing up for the last week of the regular season, and the Sectional Tournament in Ida Grove on Feb. 2.

The coach was asked how it is being a high school head coach for the first time. “I don’t really have anything to compare it to. I was at the middle school level and there’s not as much preparation time putting lineups and practice plans together. I really like it, and am glad I took the position. I have great coaches to work with and our kids work hard and put so much into it, and they’re good guys to be around. Hopefully, as we continue year in and year out, we can form this program into something that’s pretty top notch and really competitive.”

Next up for Greene County is a quadrangular on Jan. 24 in Perry with the Blue Jays, Ballard (Huxley), and Humboldt. They’ll end the regular season on Jan. 26 at the ACGC Charger Invitational in Guthrie Center.
