The top ranking Republican in the US House will be visiting with an Iowa Representative Monday.

Sources say US House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Sunday that he will be meeting with Congressman Steve King about his recent actions in the media. The meeting with McCarthy comes after a sleuth of comments made against the nine-term congressman after his interview with the New York Times in which the article King said “White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?” He went on to say “Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?”

King released a statement following the article saying in part, “I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define.” The statement goes on to say “It’s true that like the Founding Fathers I am an advocate for Western Civilization’s values, and that I profoundly believe that America is the greatest tangible expression of these ideals the World has ever seen…I am simply a Nationalist.”

US Senator Joni Ernst said on Twitter on Saturday that she condemned King’s comments on white supremacy saying “they are offensive and racist – and not representative of our state of Iowa.”

Last week, two Republicans have already announced their candidacy to challenge King for the 2020 primary. They include Iowa Assistant Senate Majority Leader Randy Feenstra and former businessman and educator Bret Richards.
