The second shotgun deer hunting season lasts through this Sunday, and as one hunting fatality has been reported in Iowa this year, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds hunters of safety regulations and tips.

Iowa DNR Conservation Officer Jeremy King says you can never wear too much of a certain color, “The most important thing is blaze orange. It’s required by law that the hunters that are hunting deer with a gun have to wear a solid blaze orange vest and the key word there is solid. It can’t have reflective strips or mesh, it can’t have black lines through it, that’s camouflage. It needs to be solid blaze orange, that’s front and back of that vest.”

King also advises hunters in Guthrie County that wearing a blaze orange hat can help others spot you around the area’s hilly terrain. For a safe hunting season the DNR urges hunters to treat every firearm as if it is loaded, always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, know your intended target and its surroundings, and do not touch the trigger of a gun until you’re ready to shoot.
