Tonight following the Community Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Jefferson, a new addition to the festivities will also kick-off.

The Light Up the Holidays event will allow everyone to travel around to different residences, businesses and churches to see outdoor lighted holiday displays. Maps of those locations will be available at the Thomas Jefferson Gardens Education and Welcome Center tonight after the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. Otherwise, copies of the maps can also be found at Greene County Community Center, Jefferson City Hall, Jefferson Public Library, Home State Bank, Peoples Bank, Cobblestone Inn and Suites and Super 8 Motel. A link to the map can also be found below. Light Up the Holidays is going on from December 6th through the 9th.

A reminder that the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony begins at 5pm with holiday stories read at the library and the Greene County Courthouse. Then Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive at the Welcome Center at 6:15pm and Santa will light the Christmas tree at 6:30. There will also be carolers, more holiday stories read and kids can tell Santa and Mrs. Claus their wish lists at the top of the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower until 7:30. Chair Angie Reese-Hueser explains why they are expanding this year’s event.

“We are just trying to make our event bigger and better. You keep coming out every year, so we’re just trying to get more activities for everybody (and) for families. We really want families to come out and enjoy the night.”

Everything tonight is free and open to the public.
