Senior Lance Hughes scored a career best 30 points, junior Carter Morton added 19, including the first dunk of the season for the team, and Greene County overcame a slow start to win a boys’ basketball game 66-50 over North Polk (Alleman) in the middle school gym in Jefferson Friday night. The action was heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com.

Greene County had lost its previous two games in one-sided fashion and was playing without injured senior Trey Hinote, out with an ankle sprain. NP led 31-27 at intermission and 36-29 early in the second half before the Rams went on a 37-14 run the rest of the game to improve to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference action. The Comets fell to 0-3 in the league and 0-4 overall.

Shooting was a bit ragged for both teams, especially from three-point range. The Rams went four of 21 beyond the arc and the Comets were six of 25. Overall, Greene County made 26 of 59 shots from the field, 10 of 15 from the foul line, and had 13 turnovers. The Comets were 18 of 47 from the field with just six baskets in the second half. They were just seven of 20 shooting free throws and turned the ball over 19 times.

Hughes made several acrobatic or mid-air shots to go with a pair of three-point goals. Morton had 15 of his 19 points in the second half, and junior John Rosado, a transfer from Puerto Rico, scored 10 points, the highest total in his brief five-game career.

Senior Braden Hoksbergen scored 24 points for the Comets, 15 coming in the first half. Cameron Markert added 10, with eight of those in the first two quarters for NP.
