The residents of Woodward headed to the polls Tuesday for a special election, and selected Todd Folkerts as mayor and Kelly Kirts as the new City Council member.

There were unofficially 139 ballots cast for the special election, which was brought about when the citizens of Woodward submitted a petition to protest the Council’s appointment of a new mayor. Folkerts, who was originally appointed to the office, ended up being the only candidate on the ballot, and received 115 votes to 13 write-ins. Seeing as how he was previously a Council member, the ballot also had three people vying to fill his vacated seat. With all votes tabulated, it was Kelly Kirts who emerged from the pack, taking 71 votes. Fellow competitors Franklin Weatherbee and David Whitney received 59 and 5 votes, respectively.

The results are still unofficial until the election is canvassed at next week’s Dallas County Board of Supervisors meeting, after which Folkerts and Kirts will be officially sworn in. They will each serve the remainder of the term for the vacated office, which for both is one more year, and then will be up for re-election. Folkerts replaces former Mayor Brian Devick, who resigned in September citing health concerns.
