While we may not be seeing typical winter conditions in southwest Iowa, kids have the opportunity to learn how to survive outside in the colder months at Springbrook State Park.

Winter Survival 101 will take place tomorrow from 1-4 p.m. and is geared towards ages 8-14, though parents are welcome to attend and learn some tips and tricks, according to Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Training Specialist Anne Riordan, “And we’ll be doing things like just learning about winter survival, things to do and how to handle yourself in a survival situation including: creating a survival shelter, starting fires without matches, and learning some navigation that could help you survive a situation.”

While talking about life-threatening situations might sound scary, Riordan says this event is meant to be a fun time to show kids how to rough it in the great outdoors. This event is free and pre-registration is not required. For more information on Winter Survival 101 contact Riordan at 641-295-6028.
