acgcWith the arrival of head coach Cody Matthewson to Guthrie Center, the football program at ACGC is on a positive track. Though his program inside the school building might be the most eye-popping. On Monday’s Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page, Matthewson said that there were so many students in the weight room one morning, there was hardly any space left to accommodate the athletes.

Matthewson says this is one problem that is a good one to have. “It’s not easy, but we’re doing the best we can to adapt to that situation with the resources we have. We’re doing the best we can to figure it out. It’s a great problem to have. It’s great to see 80-90 kids in the weight room every single day. I think our bed (size) for this year was 174. So (if) you got 90 kids in there you’ve got over 50% of your student body in the weight room going through workouts on a consistent basis.”

Matthewson says the uptick in weight room attendance and conditioning has positively contributed to the health of the athletes at ACGC this fall. He’s hoping that continues for the rest of the season and beyond and credits the coaches from the other sports for helping to foster that level of positivity.

The ACGC winter sports season begins with regular season play for the girls basketball team on Monday against the Audubon Wheelers. The game can be heard live on KKRF2 and RaccoonValleyRadio.com, with tip off set for 7:30pm from Guthrie Center.
