Monday started the preseason practice period for girls basketball in Iowa, and a new set of senior leaders are taking control for the first time. At West Central Valley Community Schools, the Wildcats girls basketball team has a singular senior in Joelle Grubbs. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network taped an interview with Wildcat head varsity basketball coach Drew Stonewall after his initial practice Monday for this week’s Wahl McAtee Tire and Service Center Guthrie County PM Sports Page. He shared his thoughts on his lone senior leader. “She’s done an excellent job moving into that leadership role,” Stonewall said, “Really, she has been a pretty good leader the last couple years, and she’s doing an even better job so far this year,” Stonewall said

Grubbs finished last season as the Wildcats top facilitator with 72 assists. She was also one of five West Central Valley varsity basketball players to score more than 100 points last winter, recording 117 points in 20 games. Stonewall also shared he’ll look for leadership from his four juniors out this winter in Sydney Neal, Aliyah Dickson, Michaela Jaeger, and Jenna Merical. The West Central Valley Wildcats varsity girls basketball team opens the 2018-19 season in Greenfield on Tuesday, November 20, battling the Nodaway Valley Wildcats in a nonconference contest.
