uspsThe cause for repairs to the Scranton Post Office is being reviewed by officials.

The United States Postal Service announced Thursday night that due to safety concerns of employees and the public, the decision was made to “emergency suspend” all postal services at the Scranton Post Office. USPS Strategic Communications Specialist Kristy Anderson tells Raccoon Valley Radio that during an inspection of the building, it was discovered that there was water intrusion into the building. Their safety department then reviewed the situation and made the recommendation to close the building for repairs.

Anderson says a third party environmental services company will assess the building for air quality and other potential hazards with the building. She adds that the full report typically takes less than two weeks to complete. Once that’s finished, a contractor is then hired to make the necessary repairs. However, since USPS leases the building, Anderson says the cost of the repairs will be on the landlord to handle.

In the interim, retail services have been moved to the Jefferson Post Office. The collection box has been relocated to the Scranton City Hall, along with Temporary Cluster Box Units for Post Office Box deliveries. Scranton customers may get their notice-left items from the Jefferson Post Office Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm with a valid photo ID.

Anderson says there’s no clear timeline for how long the Scranton facility will remain closed. Raccoon Valley Radio will bring you more information as it becomes official.
