Spooktacular 2017 2

Halloween is right around the corner, and before you know it the streets will be filled with kids in costumes in their annual quest for candy. While the holiday is all about fun, Perry Police Chief Eric Vaughn reminds trick-or-treaters to make sure they stay safe.

Vaughn says one of the biggest safety issues during Beggar’s Night every year is when motorists can’t see kids as well because of their costumes. With that in mind, he offers some tips. “I know it’s typical to have like dark costumes and that kind of thing, (but) if they can have something reflective on them it would be helpful. If they can carry a flashlight if they’re out in the neighborhoods, or maybe a glow stick, that will really help. Also if they’re wearing any type of mask or something, make sure that they can have good vision out of it, and they could see out of it. It’s not drooping over their face and over their eyes, so they can definitely see where they’re going.”

Vaughn adds, motorists also need to be extra cautious on Beggar’s Night, because kids have a tendency to get excited and run out when you may be least expecting them. Additionally, Vaughn asks people to watch out for older kids who might be looking to execute some Halloween pranks. He says some pranks are fairly harmless, but others can be rather destructive and expensive to repair. To that end, he warns potential troublemakers that officers will be out throughout the City on the 30th and 31st to ensure everyone has a safe holiday.
