The number of unbeaten Class 2A football teams in Iowa after five weeks of the season has shrunk to four. Greene County, Algona, Spirit Lake, and PCM (Monroe) are the only teams without a loss in the class just past the halfway mark of the regular season. The latest win for the Rams came on Friday night at Linduska Field over Shenandoah by a 62-0 score in the District 9 opener.

That list is guaranteed to be reduced by at least one as Algona and Spirit Lake are both in District 2 and they’ll play each other in Algona on Oct. 12. PCM and Greene County are both Heart of Iowa Activities Conference members, but football is played in districts and not conferences, so the Mustangs and Rams are in separate districts with PCM in district 8 and Greene County in district 9.

After playing one of the most difficult schedules in 2016 and ’17 as a Class 3A program, the Rams have dropped to 2A this season and have one of the softer schedules to date. Nevada (3-2) is the only team Greene County has played that has a winning record. Gilbert is 1-4, while Perry, Saydel (Des Moines), and Shenandoah are are winless.

The schedule toughens up this week with a trip to newly refurbished Carroll Athletic Field to face Kuemper Catholic 2-3) on Friday night on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. The Knights are a perennial playoff program that has played a much tougher schedule to date than Greene County. Kuemper won last year’s game 21-14 in Jefferson.
