Greene County has started the high school football season with a 3-0 record and part of the credit goes to the Rams’ run defense. In the first three games, teams have run for 45, 40, and four yards. As a result, the opposition has gone to the air more often, and the results there have been mixed. Greene County has allowed two touchdowns so far this season with one rushing and one passing, and the opponents are averaging just 5.33 points per game while Greene County is at 40 points per game. The 68-0 win in Des Moines over Saydel last Friday helped both Greene County averages.

Gilbert is next for Coach Mitch Moore’s team and the Tigers are a small Class 3A team that downed the Rams 37-31 at Gilbert in 2017. The Rams go to Gilbert for a second straight year and the Tigers are averaging 112 rushing yards per game and 132 through the air. Senior quarterback Matt Barragy was just seven for 25 through the air in a loss at Boone last Friday, but he’s thrown for 395 yards, four touchdowns, and just two interceptions in the first three games. The ground attack for the Tigers has sputtered at times with no one averaging more than 38 yards per game, but they will used five different ball carriers.
