Perry Blue Jay Sculpture

The Perry Varsity Football Team had their best chance of winning a game yet this season, but still wound up on the losing end Friday night, falling 14-13 to Dallas Center-Grimes.

Perry would start the game off strong, scoring on their second drive of the first quarter. They capped an 83-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run by Kaleb Olejniczak. They had another opportunity to score in the second quarter, getting all the way to the Mustangs’ 18 yard line. However, a mishandled read-option play led to a fumble recovered by DCG. The first half ended with the Blue Jays leading 7-0. In the third quarter, after recovering a fumble at the DCG 23-yard line, Perry got on the scoreboard once more thanks to a 1-yard touchdown run by Justin Stammer. They missed the extra point attempt, though, so they only went up 13-0 which was their lead heading into the final period.

It was a completely different game in the fourth quarter, as the Mustangs would return a punt all the way to Perry’s 39-yard line. A few minutes later DCG scored their first points on an 8-yard touchdown catch by Isaac Boley. Perry’s next drive would stall deep in their own territory, and after a short punt the Mustangs once again had the ball on the Blue Jays’ side of the field. Three plays later, it was once again Boley finding the endzone from 5-yards out. DCG converted the extra point, giving them a 14-13 lead. Perry would be unable to make it past midfield the rest of the game, and with the clocks showing zeroes their hearts were once again broken.

The loss brings the Blue Jays record to 0-5, though four of the losses have been by a total of 12 points. Next week they travel to Webster City for a conference battle with the Lynx. Make sure to listen to AM 1310, FM 99.7 KDLS for live play-by-play coverage, with pregame starting at 7 p.m.
