Yellow penalty markers littered Panorama Stadium Friday night as the Panther varsity football team dropped their district opener. Panorama was flagged 20 times resulting in 175 penalty yards as the Clarinda Cardinals left Guthrie County with a 28-27 victory. The Panthers, who held a 21-7 lead after the first quarter, also turned the football over three times, two interceptions and one lost fumble. The Cardinals were flagged five times for 35 yards and also turned the football over three times. Panorama had a tough time establishing a running game Friday as the Cardinal defense allowed two positive rushing yards. Sophomore quarterback Alejandro Mendez threw for a career-high 417 yards in the setback, scoring two touchdowns and tossing two interceptions. The loss drops Panorama football’s record to 3-2 overall. The Panthers resume their season Friday in a road district contest against the Mount Ayr Raiders. Mount Ayr thumped West Central Valley in their district opener Friday night in Stuart, 54-29. The varsity game kicks off at 7 p.m. from Mount Ayr High School.
