A missed extra point proved to be costly in the district opener Friday evening for the Panorama Panthers varsity football team. The Panthers welcomed the Clarinda Cardinals to Panorama Stadium for the Class 1A District 8 opener. Panorama and Clarinda each scored four touchdowns but the Panthers missed their extra point attempt on their final one to give the Cardinals a 28-27 victory. Sophomore quarterback Alejandro Mendez threw for a career-high 417 yards, scoring two touchdowns and tossing two interceptions. Senior Gracen Welburg caught nine passes for 187 yards and a touchdown. Clarinda’s defense allowed two positive rushing yards to the Panthers. The loss drops Panorama to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in district play. The Panthers resume their season next Friday on the road against the Mount Ayr Raiders.
