Enrollment in the Adel-DeSoto-Minburn School District is growing every year, which Superintendent Greg Dufoe says is both a blessing and a curse.

The good is fairly obvious, as more students means more funding from the state. The bad is harder to see for an outside observer, which is that the District is starting to run out of room for all the students in their current buildings. Dufoe says they’ve already taken one step towards keeping that problem contained, which is cutting off any new open enrollment into the District. However, he emphasizes that ADM is in the process of making sure their facilities can keep up with the rapid growth in the area.

To that end, the school has contracted with RSP and Associates to formulate a Facility Master Planning Committee, which has met several times over the last year. Dufoe says one decision that’s likely a forgone conclusion is the need for a completely new building. “The really specific charge is ‘How are we going to deal with our enrollment growth?’ And all indications indicate the need for some sort of an elementary building first. That’s where the growth is the most present. It’s really we’re looking at the potential of a new school building, most likely at the elementary grades. DeSoto Intermediate would still be utilized as a school building. That is in the plan, we need that capacity as well. So it would be an elementary building of some grade configuration, and that has yet to be determined.”

Dufoe says they anticipate the committee work to be done by January, at which time their findings will be presented to the ADM School Board for consideration.
